Kurma Mariami is graded AA by most Iranian exporters and sold into Malaysia mostly through Bandar Abbas. Older blog copy on this site called it a medicinal fruit — a leftover phrase from years when sellers borrowed clinic-sounding language to sell dried fruit. The Mariami and Piarom range on the market today is priced on grade and moisture, not on any treatment claim.
Grade AA means less breakage in the box, a darker skin, and a moisture level that keeps the fruit soft without turning sticky in Malaysia's humidity. Grade A costs less and dries out faster once opened. Neither grade treats anything — they're food.
Where the medicinal claims came from
Old wholesale blogs across the region copied the same paragraph: fibre, potassium, a line about digestion, a line about blood sugar, a line telling readers to see a doctor. It reads like a disclaimer bolted onto a sales pitch, because that's roughly what it was. Dates have always carried that kind of folk reputation, the same way honey and turmeric do — worth knowing as history, not worth repeating as a health instruction.
What a buyer should actually check on the packaging: harvest year, country of origin, and net weight after packing loss. None of that needs a medicinal claim to sell.
Buying Mariami without the noise
Press the skin gently — it should give slightly, not feel hard or sugared over with crystallised syrup on the surface. A strong fermented smell means the batch sat too long before packing. If you're comparing sellers, ask which harvest season the stock is from; Mariami sold more than a year after harvest loses texture even in cold storage.
