What A Fat Loss Day Is Like

Healthy plate of food with dates as a snack

Shift work wrecks a normal eating schedule. If you clock in at 10pm and finish at 6am, "breakfast, lunch, dinner" stops meaning anything, and that's usually when the vending machine starts winning.

Here's a day that actually works around a night shift, using dates as the thing you reach for instead of a second energy drink.

Before the shift (6-7pm, "your dinner")

Eat a real plate before you leave the house: protein, rice or bread, vegetables. This is the meal that has to hold you through the first half of the night, so don't skip it to save calories — an empty stomach at midnight just means you overeat at 2am instead.

The first break (around midnight)

This is where most people grab chocolate from the vending machine because it's fast and it's there. Bring your own instead: 3-4 kurma, a small handful of nuts, a bottle of water. Dates give you sugar your body can use quickly, without the crash that hits 45 minutes after a chocolate bar. Pack them the night before, in a container, so there's nothing to decide at midnight.

The second break (3-4am)

Energy dips hardest here — it's not really hunger, it's your body clock telling you it's supposed to be asleep. A piece of fruit and a few more dates, plus a short walk if your workplace allows it, does more than another coffee. Coffee this late just delays the crash you'll get on the drive home.

After the shift (6-7am, "your dinner" again, backwards)

Keep this one light — a bowl of oats with chopped dates and yoghurt works well, since a heavy meal right before sleeping during the day tends to leave you groggy rather than rested. If you're trying to lose fat on a schedule like this, sleep quality matters more than shaving another 100 calories off this meal.

What to actually buy

Keep a container of dates at work, not at home — the point is that they're there at 1am when the vending machine is the only other option. Check what's in season and where it's from on our Medjool price guide, and if you're new to buying kurma regularly, our local vs imported guide is a good place to start.

Night shifts don't leave much room for meal prep. Two containers packed the night before is a smaller ask than trying to build a whole diet plan around hours that keep changing week to week.
