Avoiding That College Freshman Weight Gain – Suggestions To Lose Weight

Sayer dates in a bowl

The dining hall buffet is the single biggest reason first-year weight gain happens faster than in any other year of school. Unlimited access, a tray big enough for four plates' worth of food, and no one watching what you take — it's designed for volume, not portion control.

Walk the whole buffet before you take anything

Loading your tray at the first station you pass means you fill up on whatever happens to be closest to the door. A quick lap past every station first lets you actually choose instead of grabbing on autopilot.

Fill half the tray with vegetables and fruit before touching the pasta station. Most dining halls put a fruit bowl near the salad bar — dates, if they're on offer, are a better final-course sweet pick than the soft-serve machine, since they satisfy a sugar craving without the sugar crash that follows an hour later. Knowing roughly what dates should cost also helps if you end up buying your own bag for the room.

Sit down before deciding on seconds

Eating while standing at the counter or scrolling on your phone makes it harder to notice when you're actually full. Sit, eat slowly, and wait a few minutes before deciding whether you want a second plate — the "still hungry" feeling right after finishing a meal often passes.

Watch the drinks station, not just the food

Free-refill soda machines and flavoured coffee stations add calories that don't feel like "eating" but add up the same way. Water with meals, and saving soda for occasionally rather than every meal, removes a chunk of the extra intake without changing a single food choice.

One buffet trip does not decide the semester

A bigger-than-usual meal after a long exam day isn't the problem — a pattern of it every day is. Paying attention most of the time, and not stressing over the occasional big plate, is a more sustainable approach than trying to eat perfectly at every single meal in the dining hall for eight months straight. Keeping your own supply of Medjool dates or Kurma Mabroom in your room covers the days the dining hall closes early.
